There are generally five techniques a therapist will use during a Swedish Massage. Each technique has a purpose, and a specific benefit to the body. Read on to find out how the five techniques of a Swedish Massage help to increase blood flood, get the lymphatic system flowing, increase flexibility, and help restore good health to the body. Effleurage
Effleurage is a technique comprised of long gliding motions or circular strokes and is most often used at the beginning of a Swedish Massage session to loosen up the muscles and, in the end, to soothe them. Effleurage increases blood flow to the muscles, increasing their temperature and preparing them for more strenuous techniques. Effleurage is also used to help reduce tension and loosen muscular knots. The level of pressure varies in degrees throughout the treatment.
The lymphatic system helps waste products to leave the body. When there is a build-up in the lymphatic system, the process of expelling waste is slowed. Effleurage improves lymphatic flow and drainage throughout the body, stimulates the process, and gets things moving again by applying strokes upward toward the heart. When the lymphatic system flows smoothly, the body is better able to maintain health and avoid disease. Lymphatic drainage can also speed up healing and reduce swelling in injured areas of the body. Effleurage also increases venous return. Venous return refers to the amount of blood that is returned back to the heart. Effleurage increases the circulation of blood by directing its strokes toward the heart.
As a therapeutic technique, Effleurage is very effective. Its benefits positively affect the body by promoting serotonin and dopamine release as the muscles are stimulated, and blood circulation is increased. The hormones released into the body encourage a feeling of happiness and well-being, thereby reducing the effects of depression, anxiety, and stress.
Petrissage
Petrissage is the second technique used during a Swedish Massage, and generally follows Effleurage is used after the muscles have been given a chance to warm up. This technique combines kneading, squeezing, and rolling the soft tissue to loosen and stretch tense muscles. This technique helps to increase circulation and blood flow and rid the body of toxins.
A series of slow and rhythmical motions are used during Petrissage. During these motions, deep pressure is used to press the muscles and tissue against each other. Picking up and squeezing the skin or soft tissue is also a method used during Petrissage.
The therapist’s movements during Petrissage help stretch and loosen the muscle fibers, activating the flow of lymphatic fluid. The increased circulation helps drain the body of toxins.
Friction
is a rubbing technique used in Swedish massage where the therapist focuses on one area and uses their fingers or thumbs to manipulate it. In a circular or perpendicular motion, pressure is then applied. The combination of both encourages the muscles to soften and realign tense muscle fibers. Friction massage is also used to help alleviate the negative affects of scar tissue. Normal skin is stretchy, and stretches with your movements. Scar tissue is very rigid, and can impede normal motions if there is a buildup. Friction massage is often prescribed to get you moving freely again.
Vibration or Shaking
is a technique whereby the therapist applies rhythmic Shaking to an area of the body to loosen and relax it. The light vibration techniques can help stimulate the parasympathetic system and help the muscles relax.
Tapotement
is a technique that is comprised of rhythmic tapping motions. Tapping is an excellent way to increase blood flow and stimulate endorphins in the body.
Therapists during a Swedish Massage often use this technique when draining lymphatic build-up or relaxing tightened muscles. The amount of pressure used determines what is most beneficial for the patient. The five approaches to Tapotement are Beating, Hacking, Slapping, Tapping, and Cupping. Beating uses a closed fist. The edge of the hand is used in Hacking, and Slapping gently uses the palms of the hands, whereas Tapping uses the cupped hand.
